Between 2002 and 2019, the Pats went to the Super Bowl nine times and won the Lombardi Trophy six times during that time. But now Brady is basking in the Tampa Bay sun, and a new dynasty has taken over the AFC. The Chiefs have qualified for the AFC Championship three times in a row and reached the Super Bowl the past two years. Mahomes has made Kansas City one of the NFL’s top scorers three years in a row, and the defense has steadily improved since the Texas Tech back took over the starting role. As long as Mahomes and his elite outside weapons stay healthy, the Chiefs will be the team to beat in the AFC for now.
Travis Kelce thinks the Chiefs and Browns are neck and neck
The Chiefs may be the favorites to win their third AFC title in a row, but they will have a big target breathing down their necks in the playoffs. So who has the best chance of beating the kings of the conference? Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns, Kelce said. They’re definitely contenders, no question, Kels said Saturday, according to Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal. That’s the spot. Baker [Mayfield] and the team have raised the bar and made this an incredible team to prepare for and take seriously. I don’t think there’s any doubt that we’ll be in the playoffs many times in the future. I think the Browns and Chiefs are really neck and neck. Those are powerful words for a team that has been languishing in the AFC basement for two decades. Cleveland has only made the playoffs twice since 1994, but this is not a typical Browns team. This Browns team beat the Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round last year and could be Kansas City’s biggest threat in the future. It’s great to see where they came from and where they are now because they are a legitimate contender, Kels added. And every team will have to work hard.
Kels was a big Browns fan as a kid
. When players are drafted into the NFL, they are forced to bury their filial loyalty to their home team. For Kelce, that team turned out to be the Browns. Kels was born in Westlake, Ohio, just 30 minutes from the city of Cleveland. I’ve always had a special place in my heart for the Browns, Kels said. The atmosphere here is incredible, a sports city like no other. Cleveland, I grew up in this sports town and I’m a part of it. I have all 216. When the Chiefs open their 2021 season at home against the Browns, Kels’ family and friends will fight to make sure he loses to their favorite NFL team. Even when I play against the Browns, they support the Browns, whether they’re related or not. It’s a fun rivalry, he said. I don’t know if these teams are rivals, but I know in my heart that there is always something to gain from a game against Cleveland.
