The 49ers are in a tough spot with Jimmy Garoppolo on the shelf for the rest of the season. They could be without their starting quarterback for the remainder of 2018, and that would leave them scrambling to find a replacement. Enter Trey Lance, who was just signed by San Francisco this week, but is already drawing comparisons to Tom Brady.
The jimmy garoppolo injury is a recent development in the NFL. Jimmy Garoppolo was injured during the 49ers’ game against the Bears on Sunday, and he may be out for the rest of the season.
This season, Trey Lance has yet to start a game for the San Francisco 49ers.
Despite being selected third overall this spring (after the 49ers sold the farm to acquire him), San Francisco is taking a cautious approach to their new franchise quarterback. The 49ers seem to think Lance will benefit from serving as Jimmy Garoppolo’s backup, similar to how the Kansas City Chiefs allowed Patrick Mahomes a full year to grow behind Alex Smith.
While it seems likely that Lance will be in the starting lineup full-time this season, the timetable may be speeding up.
Trey Lance may make his 49ers debut this weekend.
Garoppolo is presently suffering from a strained right calf, and all indications are that he will miss the 49ers’ Week 5 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. He didn’t show up for practice on Thursday, which is usually an indication that he won’t be able to play on Sunday.
As a result, Lance is the only quarterback choice.
Due to Garoppolo’s injury, the first-round rookie did wind up playing a significant amount of snaps in the 49ers’ Week 4 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks. Lance had a great game, throwing two touchdowns and gaining 198 yards in total offense. Lance, on the other hand, mainly reached these figures during “garbage time.” Seattle also boasts one of the league’s weakest defenses.
Lance, on the other hand, should be getting ready to race on Sunday. While playing an undefeated club in your first career start isn’t ideal, Lance just got some encouraging news that could make things a lot easier for him against the Cardinals’ pass rush.
Trent Williams, an All-Pro left tackle, will play for the 49ers.
With JJ Watt and Chandler Jones yelling at the top of their lungs for Arizona, Lance could be in big danger on Sunday. Lance’s debut just got a lot simpler with All-Pro left tackle Matt Cassel ready to return to the lineup for the 49ers.
Williams injured his shoulder in the team’s Week 4 defeat, and it was uncertain if he would play in Week 5. He didn’t take part in the 49ers’ practice on Wednesday.
Williams, on the other hand, made significant progress between Wednesday and Thursday, and was a full participant in Thursday’s practice. “Trent was excellent,” stated Kyle Shanahan, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. “He was able to go out and practice today, so he’ll be OK for Sunday.”
Williams is, without a doubt, the greatest left tackle in the NFL. Lance no longer has to be concerned about his blindside, which is fantastic news for the rookie quarterback.

One last issue arises now that Williams is a shoe-in to play on Sunday.
What if Lance receives the ball first and performs admirably? Is he going to be benched again by the 49ers?
Take it a step further: what if Lance does the unimaginable and defeats an undefeated squad in his first career start? Shanahan would have a hard time justifying going back to Garoppolo.
Only time will tell whether Lance is promoted to the starting lineup and performs well. A good showing from the rookie, on the other hand, might spell the end of the Garoppolo era in San Francisco.
