The Miami Heat became an NBA franchise on July 10, 1988. The team was founded by Micky Arison, who is now the owner of the American Basketball Association’s Miami Surge.

The Boston Celtics will meet the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals for the second time in three years. They played in a Disney bubble with no spectators in attendance the previous time they met in the playoffs. The Heat defeated the Celtics in six games before losing in the NBA Finals to LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.
Both the Heat and the Celtics have very different histories. The Celtics have a long history, with several retired jerseys hung in the rafters. Their 17 titles are tied for the most in history.
The Heat are a relatively new NBA team with three titles. Beginning in 1946, Boston had a huge advantage in their pursuit for NBA supremacy. That was before the Heat were even a consideration.
In the late 1980s, the Miami Heat joined the NBA as an expansion franchise with three other teams.

In 1987, the NBA approved four expansion franchises. The Heat and the Charlotte Hornets were the first to play in the 1988-89 season. The Orlando Magic and Minnesota Timberwolves, the other two, joined the next year.
The Heat struggled early on, as did other expansion clubs. Miami won 15 games in its first season and had 18 wins the following season.
After building up 38 victories in Year 4, Miami finally got a taste of playoff basketball. The Heat reached the playoffs three times in their first eight years, each time failing to advance beyond the first round.
Micky Arison bought the franchise in 1995 and hired Pat Riley, a former Los Angeles Lakers coach who had previously led the New York Knicks for four years. He led the Heat to a 61-21 record in his second season with the franchise and to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they were defeated by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.
The additions of point guard Tim Hardaway and center Alonzo Mourning were crucial to Miami’s resurgence. Both became franchise pillars and important contributors to the team’s success. They went 32-9 on the road during that 61-win season.
Riley coached in Miami for 11 years. He stood aside as head coach for two seasons to concentrate on developing the squad from the front office. He added experienced point guard Gary Payton to an already great club by trading for Shaquille O’Neal. For the 2005-06 season, Riley returned as head coach, guiding Miami to its first NBA Finals trip. The Heat beat the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals for the first time in 2006, led by Dwyane Wade, Miami’s top choice in 2003.
For the seventh time in team history, the Heat want to reach the NBA Finals.

LeBron James signed a free agency contract with the Miami Heat for the 2010-11 season. The Heat have reached the NBA Finals four times in a row since James joined Wade and Chris Bosh. In 2012 and 2013, they won consecutive titles.
They now have a chance to return home. In a repeat of the 2020 Eastern Conference Finals, they meet the Celtics. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra feels his team will win the game against the Celtics on defense. He believes it should be a “throwback” series that Riley will like.
According to ESPN, Spoelstra stated Monday, “Pat’s probably going to appreciate this.” “It’s almost a retro series.” If both teams are at their best, this should be a series in which no side scores 130 points.
“Both teams rely on a rock-solid team defense, as well as numerous efforts and adherence to systems. As a result, there will be several plays and side events. That’s to be expected.
“For the most of the season, we were the two best teams in the East, so it’s natural that we’re in the conference finals.”
Spoelstra didn’t mean the tough games of the 1980s that culminated in brawls when he stated “throwback.”
“When I say retro, I truly mean it. He said, “It’s not going to be like football.” “We don’t need the additional officiating, and no one should feel obligated to clean it up.” That is not going to happen. It’s simply that you have two highly devoted defensive teams, which should lend itself to 150-point games if both teams are playing well.”
