The Atlanta Hawks have been around since 1946, but for many fans, this season is the first time they have had a chance to experience the excitement of a Hawks title run. At the beginning of the season, the old adage of “slow and steady wins the race” is still a relevant concept to both the coaching staff and the players. It is a mantra that refuses to die, as the team works their way to the top of the Eastern Conference.

I’ve been a sports fan my entire life, and I’ve always been an Atlanta Hawks fan. During my life, the Hawks have never won the NBA Championship. They were good, but not that good, and they were always in the middle of the pack. There’s a reason we don’t hear about Hawks basketball in the news, or in schools, or in the political arena. Hawks basketball is a dull topic, and a topic that is usually suitable for a blog that has an audience that is extremely interested in sports and Atlanta sports.

As a Houston native, I can’t help but root for the Hawks. But even as a die-hard fan, I have to admit that they have been disappointments. Since the Jordan era (1996 through 1998), the Hawks have not won a single championship. In fact, since the return of the NBA Finals in 2004, no team from the state of Texas has won a title. So, with the team looking to redeem themselves with a championship this year, can the Hawks finally break their championship drought?. The Atlanta Hawks are in the final four of the NBA playoffs for only the fourth time since moving to Georgia in 1968. Tra Young and his teammates defeated the first-seeded Philadelphia 76ers in the semifinals of the 2021 Eastern Conference and will take on Giannis Antitokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks for a spot in the NBA Finals.

The previous three division/conference finals did not go well, with the Hawks losing each time. Of course, that means the Hawks have never won an NBA championship or even made it to the NBA Finals since moving to Atlanta.

During their stay at St. John’s, however, they were able to get a lot of help. The St. Louis Hawks have reached the NBA Finals four times in five years, including once with the franchise’s only title.

In five years in St. Louis, the Hawks have reached the NBA Finals four times

.

After never reaching the NBA Finals like the Buffalo Bisons, Tri-City Blackhawks or Milwaukee Hawks, the franchise became a powerhouse after moving to St. Louis. The St. Louis Rams were the first team to win the 1955-56 season, thanks in large part to Bob Pettitte, who was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 1955 and became an 11-time All-Star and two-time NBA MVP.

In the eleven seasons Pettitte has played for the team, the last ten of which have been in St. Louis, he has been a key figure. The St. Louis Hawks reached the Western Division (now called the Western Conference) finals eight times and the NBA Finals four times, all in the five-year period from 1957 to 1961.

On each of those four occasions, the Hawks faced the Boston Celtics, who won 11 titles in 13 years from 1957 to 1969. In 1967, Boston lost to the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference Finals, meaning the Hawks were the only team to beat the Celtics in their historic series that began in 1958.

Hawks won their only NBA title in 1958

After losing to the Celtics in the 1957 NBA Finals, the Hawks returned the following season with a 41-31 record and won the second of their five consecutive regular season West Division titles. Then they easily defeated the Detroit Pistons in the West Division Finals, won the series in five games and took revenge on Boston in the NBA Finals.

Thanks to the strong play of Pettitte, who averaged 29.3 points and 17 rebounds in the series, and forward Cliff Hagan, who averaged 25.2 points and 9.7 rebounds per game, the Hawks defeated the Celtics in six games, winning four games by a combined eight points. Pettitte was simply outstanding in Game 6 of the series, scoring 50 points and grabbing 19 rebounds in the Hawks’ 110-109 victory.

Of course, it should be noted that Bill Russell only played in four of the six games, as he suffered a serious ankle injury in the third game. But a title is a title, and the Hawks’ victory in the 1958 finals remains the only championship in the club’s history.

After Pettitte’s retirement at the end of the 1964-65 season, the Hawks reached the West Division finals in each of the next two seasons, losing against the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Francisco Warriors, respectively.

After losing against the Warriors in the semifinals of the Western in 1968, the team moved to Atlanta, but remained in the West for two more seasons, both of which ended in the division finals. But each time, they failed to make the NBA Finals and lost to the Lakers.

The Hawks reached the Eastern Conference in 1970, and it took them 45 years to get past the Conference semifinals. In 2015, they finally made it to the Eastern Conference Finals, but were defeated by LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Hawks now have a second chance to reach the NBA Finals as the Eastern representative when they meet the Bucks in the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals.
